Getting stopped by the police for something as minor as not using your turn signal can lead to more issues once you’re stopped. Speeding, traffic violations, and other issues can lead to a hefty fine and leave you in a pinch with your insurance companies.

Are flashing lights in your rearview mirror? Here are some ways to help you put the brakes on the consequences of traffic citations.

First, take a look at the citation.

It should reference a law section.  This is the actual charge you must address.  A lot of people are surprised to find out that their charge is actually different from what they believed they were charged with.  For example, some people may believe they are charged with speeding, when in fact they are charged with reckless driving.  The difference is significant.  Speeding is a traffic infraction, punishable by a maximum fine of $250.00.  Reckless driving is a class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail, up to a $2500.00 fine, or both, and up to a six-month suspension of your license.

Second, even if it is a minor ticket, it can have consequences.

Have you had a lot of tickets in the past?  Are you under eighteen (18) years old?  Do you have a commercial driver’s license (CDL)?  If so, even minor offenses can have outsized consequences.

Third, if you have any questions or you are concerned about the possible consequences, gather up your documents and give us a call. We can get you going on the right path to challenge your charges.
