Florida teenager found guilty of setting another teenager on fire

Matthew Bent, 17, of Miami was convicted of aggravated battery for setting Michal Brewer, 17, years old on fire in 2009.

Bent was one of the three teenage boys who surrounded Brewer and poured alcohol on him then set him on fire with a lighter. The other two boys, Denver Jarvis and Jesus Mendez, are currently being held.

The dispute was over $40 in which Bent claimed Brewer owed him and when he didn’t pay up, Bent stole Brewer’s father’s bicycle as collateral. Brewer told the police which resulted in Bent’s arrest. The next day when Bent returned, he, Jarvis, and Mendez circled around Brewer and called him a snitch.

Eye witnesses said they saw Jarvis pour the alcohol on Brewer and that Mendez started the fire which caused 65% of burns on Brewers body. Bent was the one who encouraged this. Brewer was able to put the fire out by running 100 yards to an apartment’s complex pool.

The defense did not call any witnesses to the stand and Bent’s sentencing will take place on July 23rd, 2012. He is facing a sentence of four years and five months to 15 years for this offense.
