Harsh Buzz: Teens Reportedly Drinking Hand Sanitizer for Illicit High

Six California teens have shown up in emergency rooms over the last few months suffering from alcohol poising that health officials attribute to an unusual source: hand sanitizer. Whatever their faults, these kids must be ace chemistry students because, according to the L.A. Times, some of the teens used salt to separate the alcohol from the sanitizer, creating the equivalent of hard liquor.

While the numbers of afflicted kids are so far very small, the ready availability of hand sanitizer combined with the faddishness of teens desiring a buzz means that the practice could become a larger issue for schools, parents, retailers and health officials.
